Dale Malcolm, one of two founding partners, brings his personal commitment to quality and service to every project. His can do, no excuses attitude permeates the culture of the practice that has earned the firm a reputation for delivering results. Working closely with both the internal team and with his clients, Dale invests his effort in finding the right solution for the client up front, and follows through with design and technical expertise.

 

While his experience includes institutional, commercial, residential, and tenant improvement projects, Dale has been extensively involved in the planning and development of industrial/R&D business parks and their associated tenant improvements for a wide variety of office, manufacturing and warehouse uses. With his guidance, the firm has developed expertise in the design of complex industrial projects that often require one-of-a-kind solutions for one-of-a-kind problems.

Dan Withee, one of two founding partners, has built the practice by helping to build communities across the region. He understands the importance of engaging not only the client but also the full range of stakeholders—from the local government agencies to the neighborhood organizations—in order to create the buildings that truly belong to their community. His skill in the early phases of project development set the stage for successful completion and satisfied clients. Recognized for his design vision, his projects are characterized by their cohesion and contextual sensitivity.

 

Dan’s experience across a wide range of project typologies includes high-density urban multi-family and mixed-use, commercial retail, office buildings, banks, single-family and custom residential. With strength as a consensus builder, he is highly successful in obtaining agency approvals on difficult or controversial infill projects.

Chief Financial Officer

 

Vicki Marcellino, Chief Financial Officer, is responsible for the fiscal operations of the firm and oversees all aspects of the financial and administrative functions, with emphasis on cash management, contract administration and project accounting. As importantly, she oversees many of the non-project related client interactions. With her combination of personal warmth and clear understanding of the business side of the practice, she has developed solid relationships with bankers, clients, consultants and insurers.

 

Prior to joining the Withee Malcolm team, Vicki developed her skills at an architectural firm in New York and a national civil engineering firm based in West Los Angeles—skills she uses to balance not only financial assets but the human ones as well.

Chief Operating Officer

 

Andrew Williams brings a broad range of experience to his role as COO for the firm. In addition to exceptional credentials as a design technology leader, he has a deep understanding of both management and project delivery requirements. Pragmatic and effective, he draws on his experiences as a designer, project manager and IT director for several highly regarded and successful design practices. He has worked on a variety of projects from residential and commercial buildings to large urban development and institutional master plans.

 

At Withee Malcolm, Andrew works closely with the partners, principals, senior associates and the entire team to develop and refine the firm’s project delivery processes to ensure quality, consistency and client satisfaction. At the same time, he champions the incorporation of technology and nurtures innovation in keeping with the firm’s values and vision.

Jeff Lemler, Principal, is the Director of Tenant Improvements. With his hands-on approach to design, attention to detail, extensive knowledge of codes, ability to navigate through city processes and his dedication, he brings exceptional value to every project and to his many long-term clients.

Jeff knows that to get the details right he has to understand the big picture—expertise that he brings to all aspects of a project from programming and space planning to design and delivery on corporate offices, R&D, manufacturing, warehouse, and industrial facilities. A problem solver and with a client-centric approach, he has a track record of success on a wide range of tenant improvement and commercial projects including the pursuit and award of LEED-certification on challenging industrial projects.

Dirk Thelen, Principal, assumes the role of Designer and Project Manager supervising architectural design teams on a broad range of project types including custom single-family homes, attached and detached condominiums, multi-family housing, senior apartments, office, retail, medical and corporate tenant improvements. Quiet but direct, he works easily with the clients, collaborators, city planners and government agencies alike.

 

Dirk’s early training and interest in construction technology informs his understanding of the architectural process from the concept design phase through production of documents to construction. At the same time, he is recognized as much for his inventive design solutions as for their ‘buildability.’ His projects express not only his thorough understanding of his clients’ requirements, but also his appreciation of contemporary architecture and the vernacular regional architecture of southern California.

Soyoung Choi Ward, a Principal and Director of Quality Control, is an experienced Project Manager with a focus on the residential, commercial, industrial, and mixed-use markets. She has a strong track record, internationally and in southern California, for coordinating projects from design development through the construction administration phases.

 

Her proven capabilities in providing quality and detail for permit processing, consultant coordination, construction documentation, and construction observation made her a natural candidate for Director of Quality Control. Her QC responsibilities include reviewing every project at each phase of development. Soyoung’s collaborative approach, coupled with her enthusiasm, diligence, and commitment to a project’s success, make her a valuable part of the Withee Malcolm team.

Ray Irmer, a Senior Associate and Director of Interior Architecture has worked in design, construction, and corporate real estate for over 30 years. He understands the varied needs of clients from the creative, technology, professional, financial, and corporate sectors, as well as, landlords, property and facility managers. His market knowledge and reputation for successful project delivery is a positive match for Withee Malcolm’s client-centric, can-do culture.

 

Ray’s experience, as a client and service provider, gives him special insight into the evolving requirements of the contemporary workplace. His portfolio includes projects ranging in scope and scale from tenant improvements to complete building repositioning programs, from small offices to 1,000,000-square-foot corporate facilities. His design experience, commitment to client satisfaction, leadership and management skills expand and strengthen the capabilities of the interiors studio.

Senior Associate, Director of Residential Architecture

 

Kody Kellogg, a Senior Associate and Director of Residential Architecture, has experience across a broad range of project types, including residential, academic and commercial buildings. In his position as Director of Residential Architecture, he takes a leadership role in guiding the design of the firm’s portfolio of multifamily and mixed-use projects including market rate and affordable communities.

 

An award-winning designer, Kody believes that thoughtful problem solving is at the heart of good architecture and he works closely with clients and staff to develop designs that not only meet pro-forma and programmatic demands but raise the aesthetic bar. In addition to leading the conceptual effort and managing the design process on projects, Kody is helping to develop the next generation of design talent in the firm as a coach and mentor.
