24 May Mission Apartments
Located in the North Bay Redevelopment Area north of downtown San Diego near the airport, the Mission Apartments create needed additional family affordable housing, and deliver on-site social services, community investment, redevelopment, and a rare “Smart Growth” opportunity to provide transit-oriented development where workers can take advantage of existing mass transit facilities.
The architecture employed a cost-effective, wood podium with parking tucked beneath three stories of apartments. Taking advantage of a change in grade, the architects created a pedestrian bridge that spans the motor court, which is required for parking, and steps down into the landscaped central courtyard to assure a safe pathway to the tot lots/play areas, outdoor seating and BBQ.
The contemporary design features bright, primary colored walls and a modern mix of materials including stucco and metal panels and sits in a comfortable juxtaposition to the nearby historic Mission Brewery building, a 1913 industrial icon.
